It is a time of both opportunity and potential peril for managed service providers.

The appetite for outsourcing IT functions to a ‘virtual CIO' is at an all-time high, and is set to continue rising as SMEs and enterprises struggle to keep on top of the changing technology landscape and latest cyber-threats.

Resellers that have made the transition to managed services have been richly rewarded with a new source of recurring revenue.

But the market is coming under strain for the first time as MSPs attempt to negotiate a number of tricky hurdles. Cloud is threatening to cut them out of the supply chain, margins are tumbling as the landscape becomes more crowded, and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is being seen in some circles as a potential headache for IT suppliers.

In fact, these threats could also be interpreted as some of the biggest opportunities available to MSPs in a decade.

While it is true that the MSP market is becoming over-populated with first-generation, ‘me-too' players, those at the cutting edge of the market are continuing to enjoy lightning growth. The rise of cloud, meanwhile, is strengthening the hand of those who can give impartial guidance on hybrid cloud strategies, and which workloads to put where. GDPR, too, is a chance for MSPs to boost their trusted advisor status with customers, while also ramping up storage and security sales.

The MSP market is predicted to grow double-digits in the coming years, but growth is not a given for those that fail to overcome the barriers that lie ahead.
